Tisha B'Av is the major annual day of mourning in Judaism, observed on the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av. The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple in Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 586 BCE and the Second Temple by the Romans in 70 CE. Over time, it has also become a day to remember other tragedies and persecutions that have affected the Jewish people throughout history. Because Tisha B'Av follows the Hebrew lunar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. If the ninth of Av falls on the Jewish Sabbath, the public observance is postponed until the tenth of Av. As a result, the exact Gregorian date varies annually. The observance is marked by a complete fast lasting approximately 25 hours, along with mourning customs similar to those observed during shiva. Many Jews gather in synagogues to read the Book of Lamentations (Eicha), recite kinnot (elegies), sit on low stools, and refrain from activities associated with joy or comfort. The day is devoted to reflection, prayer, and remembrance of the destruction of Jerusalem and other historical calamities. A common misconception is that Tisha B'Av commemorates only the destruction of the Jewish Temples. In reality, while the destruction of the First and Second Temples remains its central focus, the day has also become a broader remembrance of significant tragedies in Jewish history. Today, it serves as both a solemn memorial and a reminder of hope for future restoration and peace.
