The name means 'Eighth Day of Assembly,' reflecting the biblical command for an additional sacred gathering after the Feast of Tabernacles. The holiday emphasizes the special relationship between God and the Jewish people and marks the conclusion of the High Holiday season. Because Shemini Atzeret follows the Hebrew lunar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are celebrated on the same day, while in many Jewish communities outside Israel they are observed on consecutive days.
