Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival observed primarily by married women, who fast from sunrise until moonrise while praying for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their husbands. In modern times, many couples observe the festival together, and some husbands also choose to fast as a gesture of mutual love and support. The festival is especially popular in northern and western India and among Hindu communities around the world. Karva Chauth is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) in the Hindu month of Kartika, according to the Purnimanta calendar followed in much of northern India. Because it follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. The day begins with a pre-dawn meal known as sargi, traditionally prepared by the mother-in-law. Participants observe a strict fast, often without food or water, until the moon rises. In the evening, women gather for prayers, listen to the traditional Karva Chauth story (vrat katha), decorate their hands with mehndi (henna), dress in festive attire, and perform rituals with a decorated earthen pot known as a karva. The fast is traditionally broken after viewing the moon through a sieve and offering prayers before sharing water and food with family. A common misconception is that Karva Chauth is observed only by married women. While this remains the traditional practice, the festival has evolved in many communities, with unmarried women sometimes observing it for a desired future spouse and many couples choosing to fast together as a symbol of mutual commitment and partnership.
