The festival does not occur on a fixed Gregorian date because it follows the traditional lunisolar calendar used for Sikh religious observances. It typically falls during October or November, depending on the lunar calendar. This differs from commemorating Guru Nanak's historical birth date on the modern civil calendar. On the festival day, gurdwaras host prayer services, devotional singing known as kirtan, religious discourses, and processions called Nagar Kirtans.
