Qixi Festival, often called Chinese Valentine's Day, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrating love, devotion, and the legendary romance of the Cowherd (Niulang) and the Weaver Girl (Zhinü). According to Chinese folklore, the lovers are separated by the Milky Way and are allowed to reunite only once each year on the seventh day of the seventh month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, when a bridge of magpies forms across the heavens. The festival has been celebrated for more than two thousand years and remains one of China's most cherished cultural observances. Because Qixi follows the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. It is observed not only in mainland China but also in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and among Chinese communities around the world, with similar festivals existing in several East Asian cultures.
