Because the Games are quadrennial rather than annual, scheduling does not follow a yearly formula; each edition's host location and specific dates are determined individually, years in advance, through a formal IOC bidding process in which cities and, in some editions, broader regions compete to host the event. Winter Games host locations are inherently more constrained than Summer Games hosts, since suitable climate and terrain for snow and ice sports substantially narrow the pool of viable candidate regions compared to summer sports, which can be staged in a much wider range of climates. Once a host is confirmed, specific opening and closing dates are set with consideration for seasonal snow and ice conditions, television broadcast windows, and coordination with other major sporting calendars, and these dates are typically announced years ahead of the Games. A common misconception is assuming the Winter and Summer Olympics are held in the same year; since 1994, the two have been deliberately staggered so that a Winter Olympics falls two years after each Summer Olympics rather than in the same calendar year, spreading major Olympic events more evenly across each four-year period rather than concentrating them into a single year followed by three Games-free years.
