Oktoberfest is the world's largest folk festival and beer festival, held annually in Munich, Germany. Although its name suggests October, the event typically begins in the second half of September and continues into the first weekend of October. The festival traces its origins to the public celebrations surrounding the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese in 1810. The festivities proved so popular that they became an annual tradition and gradually evolved into the internationally recognized event celebrated today. Unlike holidays tied to a fixed calendar date, Oktoberfest begins on a variable date each year. The opening Saturday is selected according to the official festival schedule established by the City of Munich, allowing the event to span approximately 16 to 18 days and conclude on the first Sunday in October, or on October 3 when German Unity Day extends the festival. Because of this scheduling method, the opening date changes from year to year but almost always falls in mid to late September. Visitors from around the world travel to Munich to enjoy traditional Bavarian food, locally brewed Oktoberfest beer served in large tents, amusement rides, parades, brass bands, and cultural performances. Participants often wear traditional Bavarian clothing, including lederhosen and dirndls, although wearing traditional attire is optional rather than required. While many cities around the world organize their own Oktoberfest-inspired events, the original Munich festival remains the largest and most historically significant. A common misconception is that Oktoberfest is simply a beer festival. While beer is central to the celebration, Oktoberfest is equally a celebration of Bavarian culture, music, food, hospitality, and local traditions. It is also commonly mistaken as taking place mostly in October, when in reality the majority of festival days occur in September because of more favorable weather and the historical scheduling tradition.
