Oktoberfest is the world's largest beer festival, held annually in Munich, Germany. The event attracts millions of visitors from around the world who come to experience traditional Bavarian culture, food, music, entertainment, and locally brewed beer. Although its name suggests an October celebration, most of the festival takes place during September and ends in early October. Oktoberfest does not have a permanently fixed calendar date. It traditionally begins in mid or late September and runs for about 16 to 18 days, ending on the first Sunday in October or on October 3 when German Unity Day extends the celebration. Because the schedule follows a weekday and holiday-based rule, the exact starting date changes every year. The festival is held at Theresienwiese, a large open space in Munich named after Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, whose wedding celebration in 1810 inspired the first Oktoberfest. Modern celebrations include large beer tents, traditional Bavarian clothing, folk music, amusement rides, parades, and regional cuisine. A common misconception is that Oktoberfest is only about drinking beer. While beer is an important part of the celebration, the festival also preserves Bavarian traditions, including music, clothing, food, hospitality, and community gatherings. It has become a global cultural event with Oktoberfest-inspired celebrations held in many countries.
