Thaipusam is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, or Subramanya, the Hindu god of war, courage, and victory. The festival commemorates the occasion when the goddess Parvati presented Murugan with the divine spear, or vel, to defeat the demon Surapadman. Observed during the Tamil month of Thai when the full moon aligns with the Pushya (Pusam) star, Thaipusam is one of the most important festivals for Tamil Hindus and is celebrated in India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and by Hindu communities around the world. Because Thaipusam follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, its date changes each year on the Gregorian calendar. The festival is especially renowned for its vibrant processions and acts of devotion, attracting millions of worshippers and visitors to major temples such as Batu Caves in Malaysia and the Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Temple in India. Devotees prepare through fasting, prayer, and purification before participating in religious processions. Many carry offerings of milk in decorated pots, while others undertake the kavadi ritual, carrying ornate structures as acts of devotion and gratitude. Some devotees practice symbolic body piercings using small spears or hooks under careful religious supervision as expressions of faith, penance, or fulfillment of vows. Music, chanting, temple ceremonies, and communal meals are central to the celebration. A common misconception is that Thaipusam is defined by body piercings. In reality, while kavadi and piercing rituals are among its most visible traditions, the festival's true purpose is spiritual devotion to Lord Murugan through prayer, self-discipline, gratitude, and the fulfillment of personal vows. Many participants celebrate without undertaking physical acts of penance.
