Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated primarily in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as well as by Tamil communities in Sri Lanka and around the world. The festival marks the end of the winter solstice period and celebrates the beginning of the Sun's northward journey, known as Uttarayana. It is a time to give thanks for a successful harvest, honor nature, cattle, and the Sun, and gather with family and friends. The name 'Pongal' comes from the traditional rice dish prepared during the festival, in which freshly harvested rice is cooked with milk until it boils over, symbolizing prosperity and abundance. Although the celebration lasts four days, beginning with Bhogi and continuing through Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal, the main festival day is Thai Pongal. The holiday is based on the Tamil solar calendar and is closely linked to the Sun's transition into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara Sankranti). Because it follows the solar calendar rather than a lunar one, Pongal almost always falls on January 14, with occasional observance on January 15 in some years due to astronomical timing. For countdown purposes, January 14 is the standard annual date. Families decorate their homes with colorful kolam patterns made from rice flour, wear new clothes, visit temples, and prepare the ceremonial Pongal dish outdoors in clay pots. Mattu Pongal honors cattle for their essential role in agriculture, while Kaanum Pongal is traditionally devoted to family visits, outings, and social gatherings. Across Tamil communities, the festival blends religious customs with cultural traditions that emphasize gratitude, generosity, and renewal. A common misconception is that Pongal is simply another name for Makar Sankranti. While the festivals occur at roughly the same time and both celebrate the harvest and the Sun's movement, Pongal has its own distinct Tamil traditions, rituals, foods, and four-day structure. It remains one of the most significant cultural celebrations in the Tamil calendar.
