Obon, often simply called Bon, is one of Japan's most important traditional observances. The festival honors the spirits of deceased ancestors and provides an opportunity for families to gather, remember loved ones, and maintain ancestral traditions. Although rooted in Buddhist beliefs, Obon has become a deeply ingrained cultural event observed by many Japanese families regardless of their level of religious practice. It is also one of the busiest travel periods in Japan as millions of people return to their hometowns to visit family graves and participate in local ceremonies. For most of Japan, Obon is observed annually from August 13 to August 16, making August 13 the traditional start of the festival. The modern August dates were adopted after Japan's calendar reforms in the nineteenth century. However, regional differences still exist. Some areas, particularly parts of Tokyo, celebrate Obon in mid-July, while Okinawa follows a date based on the traditional lunar calendar. Because the August observance is by far the most widespread, countdowns typically use August 13 as the standard starting date. Families clean ancestral graves, make food offerings, light lanterns to guide ancestral spirits, and gather for memorial ceremonies. One of the best-known traditions is Bon Odori, a community dance performed in parks, temples, and public squares. At the conclusion of the festival, floating lantern ceremonies known as Toro Nagashi are held in many locations, symbolically guiding ancestral spirits back to the spiritual world. Fireworks, festivals, and neighborhood gatherings also accompany the celebrations in many regions. A common misconception is that Obon is a public national holiday. While it is not an official public holiday in Japan, many businesses close or reduce operations because so many people travel during the festival. Today, Obon remains one of Japan's most meaningful annual traditions, blending remembrance, family reunion, community celebration, and respect for ancestors.
