Navratri is one of the most important Hindu festivals, celebrated over nine nights in honor of the Divine Feminine, particularly the goddess Durga and her various forms. The festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Across India and in Hindu communities around the world, Navratri is observed through prayer, fasting, music, dance, and cultural celebrations. While several Navratri festivals occur throughout the year, Sharad Navratri, held in the autumn, is the most widely celebrated and is generally the one referred to simply as 'Navratri.' Countdowns typically use the first day of this nine-day festival as the event date. Navratri follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, beginning on the first day (Pratipada) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Ashwin. Because the Hindu calendar is based on both lunar phases and the solar year, the festival's Gregorian date changes every year, usually falling in September or October. Regional traditions and local astronomical calculations may occasionally result in slight differences in the observed start date. The way Navratri is celebrated varies across India. In Gujarat, evenings are famous for Garba and Dandiya Raas dances, while West Bengal celebrates Durga Puja with elaborate artistic displays, cultural performances, and community gatherings. Many devotees observe fasting, visit temples, recite sacred texts, and perform daily prayers honoring different forms of the goddess during each of the nine days. A common misconception is that Navratri and Durga Puja are separate, unrelated festivals. In reality, Durga Puja represents the final days of Sharad Navratri in many eastern regions of India, while other parts of the country emphasize fasting, dance, and devotional practices throughout all nine nights. Despite regional differences, the festival shares the common themes of devotion, renewal, and the victory of righteousness over evil.
