Mawlid, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi or the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday, is an Islamic observance that commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. It is traditionally observed on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, although some Muslim communities observe it on other dates based on their religious traditions. Mawlid is recognized in many countries across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere, while some Muslim communities choose not to observe it because they believe it was not practiced during the earliest generations of Islam. As a result, attitudes toward Mawlid vary across different Islamic traditions and schools of thought. The observance follows the Hijri lunar calendar, so its date changes every year on the Gregorian calendar. Since the Islamic year is approximately 354 days long, Mawlid moves about 10 to 11 days earlier each Gregorian year and gradually cycles through every season over several decades. In addition, the exact date may differ by one day between countries depending on whether local moon sightings or astronomical calculations are used to determine the beginning of the lunar month. Where Mawlid is observed, celebrations may include recitations from the Qur'an, readings about the Prophet's life, devotional poetry, religious lectures, charitable activities, community meals, and gatherings in mosques or homes. Some countries also hold public processions or cultural events, while others observe the day quietly through prayer and reflection. In several Muslim-majority nations, Mawlid is recognized as an official public holiday. A common misconception is that all Muslims celebrate Mawlid in the same way. In reality, practices vary widely. Some Muslims regard it as an important opportunity to remember the Prophet Muhammad's life and teachings, while others do not observe the occasion for theological reasons. These differences reflect the diversity of Islamic traditions around the world rather than disagreement about the Prophet's significance.
