A common misconception is that Day of the Dead is the Mexican version of Halloween. While the two observances occur at a similar time of year, they have different histories, meanings, and traditions. Day of the Dead is centered on remembrance and honoring ancestors rather than costumes or frightening themes. The use of skeleton imagery, including calaveras and decorative skulls, reflects the idea that death is a natural part of life and memory rather than something to be feared.
